SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS ANNOUNCEMENT

The Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) Washington state is dedicated to the development and advancement of individuals interested in careers in transportation. COMTO offers scholarships each year to students who are pursuing their education in transportation or a related field. Our scholarship programs are designed to support the best and the brightest as they seek to obtain their credentials in transportation. Multiple scholarship awards are available to meet the specific needs of the student. The awards are designed to make the transportation profession more diverse and accessible to those of limited means. The Washington State chapter of COMTO is pleased to offer the following scholarships:


COMTO Washington State Founders Scholarship – $1,000

In honor of the founders of Washington state COMTO and their devotion to mentorship and service, this local scholarship is awarded to address the needs of individuals who face financial challenges to pursuing either undergraduate degrees or certification awards. Women or minority (African American, Hispanic, Native American or Pacific Islander) undergraduate students enrolled in an approved accredited institution. Students must be citizens of the United States.


Mt. Rainier Graduate Scholarship – $2,500

Established in 2018, this scholarship was designed to encourage individuals to pursue career paths in transportation. Scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in an approved accredited institution pursuing graduate studies in transportation or a related field, such as transportation finance, public administration, planning, engineering, or communications.


HNTB Leadership Scholarship - $2,500

Established in 2018, this scholarship was designed to encourage individuals to pursue career paths in transportation. Scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in an approved accredited institution pursuing graduate studies in transportation or a related field, such as transportation finance, public administration, planning, engineering, or communications.

Awarded each year to a current college student who is pursuing a degree and has a great interest in transportation. The HNTB Leadership Scholarship will be awarded to a well-rounded student who embodies HNTB’s Leadership Characteristics that inform all we do as a firm and as individual employees.

One of the leadership characteristics is “success oriented” – a key attribute that scholarship recipients must exhibit. This means that the applicant is a person who is “Being persistent; willing to give extra effort and initiative; understands what drives success; uncovering what is really important to success in any situation; does not confuse activity with results.” Click here for award Criteria and Qualifications


Washington State Ambassador Scholarship – $ 1,500

The Washington State Ambassador Scholarship was established to encourage individuals to pursue career paths related to public policy or public administration in transportation or a related field. This local scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students and supports the COMTO goal of fostering the development of individuals in the public policy sector of the transportation field.


Mt. Baker Leaders Scholarship - $500 - $1,500

COMTO awards three non-renewable scholarships each year to Washingtonians who are high school or post-secondary students working towards an associate degree or vocational diploma from a community or technical college. The Mt. Baker Leaders scholarship is awarded to address the needs of individuals who have interest in the vocational/trade sector within the transportation field.


Applications are due on June 28, 2019 (no postmarks). Emailed application submittals are encouraged. Please go through the COMTO Scholarship Checklist before posting your application

Awardees will be notified on August 9, 2019 by email and US mail of award. Awards will be presented at the COMTO Awards Banquet in the fall of award. Attendance at the awards dinner is highly recommended.

Scholarships are competitive and based on the applicant's academic record, specific transportation goals, and transportation-related activities or job skills.
